Kudos to ElectroHub for a little of that thinking outside the box–they’ve decided to do something a little different with the upcoming charger that they’re looking to show off at CES: they’re not going to make you add a specific back plate to your devices to charge them, they’re going to make you use a specific kind of battery instead.
The ElectroHub charger, which will debut at the CES (Consumer Electronic Show), provides an actual set of ElectroHub batteries (available in common sizes like AA and AAA, which is why you see an Xbox 360 controller on that stand) that get charged instead of trying to run a charge through a back plate and into the existing battery. Even better, it’ll charge fully six devices at once.
Of course, there are plenty of devices out there that don’t run on AA batteries–and I’m not talking about the ones that run on AAA instead–but the ElectroHub actually has these devices covered too. For cell phones and the like that have their own specific battery, a protective case is available that works with the ElectroHub’s charger to pump voltage into the existing battery. That’s about how the Powermat does things, which is a lot nicer than trying to install your own backplate.
The ElectroHub is set to be released early next year (not long after its big CES debut) and is further slated to cost $39. That comes with a set of batteries, and further sets thereafter are set to cost $10, which is actually a pretty good price when you consider how comparatively inexpensive it is to continually recharge old batteries than to replace them with new ones. Speaking as someone who uses a lot of rechargeable batteries (I favor the Rayovac Renewal myself), I know what kind of savings that’s talking about, and it’s pretty nice.
