Portable TV Display Has too Many Compromises

THE ENVIZEN HOME Roam TV ($160) lets you watch any home entertainment center video on a small, low resolution display you can carry around the. But the gotchas, starting with no ability to control the remote device, are so numerous that TV is hard to recommend.

In this two-piece kit, a small transmitter box connects to any media source with  AV (composite audio-video) out ports and sends the signal wirelessly to a 7-inch display. The transmiter's standard AV ports connect to a primary media source (say, a TV or cable/satellite box), and additional ports allow to you connect up to three more AV sources. The display unit weighs 1 pound and is 0.9 inch thick.

But it's frustrating: Though setup was a breeze, image quality wasn't great, in part because the device downsizes the source high-res image to fit its 480-by-234-pixel display. That's a very low resolution. The device uses the crowded 2.4Ghz band so it's highly prone to interfrence. And you can't control the media source.
